I submitted a few display ads, it's been almost a month, and the ads are still pending. How long does the approval process usually take for display ads (I have no problems with normal text ads)

It shouldn't take too long, one month is definitely a very long time range.

Quoting an answer from a Google Employee:

When you create or edit an ad, they are automatically submitted for review. AdWords Specialists review ads and keywords in the order in which they are submitted. Some ads have to be manually approved before they run and this may take longer than otherwise. And the best way to speed up this process is to contact support.

I recommend you to contact support for a quicker resolution for your ad review process.
